Organics And Your Health

The processed foods have caused your body's nutritional system to become clogged, confused, and locked into fat-storing mode. If you're like most people, you've tried it all but nothing seems to work. Now it's time to find out why. If you'll give us only 20 minutes of your time, we'll show you the truth about weight loss in a form so compelling it can change your life.

Most people who struggle with an overweight condition blame themselves for lack of discipline or willpower. While good eating habits are important, the real problem has to do with a much larger issue, our food supply.

Perhaps you can now understand your challenge in a different light. Our processed and packaged food supply is inundated with artificial chemicals that give the junk foods flavor, color, sweetness, and a long shelf life. Over time, these chemicals build up in your body causing your body's nutritional system to become confused, clogged, and locked into fat-storing mode. The first step to healthy weight loss is cleansing your body of these chemicals and understanding your body's need for fruits, veggies, grains, nuts, seeds, and berries - otherwise known as whole foods. We'll tell you more about our foods in a moment. First we need to untangle a few of the "myths" and misunderstandings about losing weight - let's start with the topic of skipping meals.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make while trying to lose weight is skipping meals. When you skip a meal, your body "thinks" that you are starving. This is a built-in survival system that all of us have. When your body "thinks" that you are starving, it makes two changes to protect you from starving.

First, it slows your metabolism causing your energy levels to drop. You slow down and your body burns less fat. Secondly, the meal you eat after you skip a meal will be converted almost entirely to fat and stored to protect you from starving. If you skip breakfast, almost all of what you eat for lunch is converted to fat. You think you’re taking in less food but in reality you’re causing your body to store more fat.

The solution is to eat small meals regularly throughout the day, fueling your body with whole foods and water. Your metabolism will increase, your stamina and endurance will increase, your appetite will decrease, and your body will produce less fat while it burns more! Your stomach will shrink back to it's normal size and a normal amount of food will leave you feeling completely full and satisfied. Learn to “listen” to your body – it knows what’s best for you. Eat whole foods and drink water when you’re hungry and stop eating once your hunger is satisfied. Then repeat as necessary throughout the day. It really is that simple!

Another common mistake while trying to lose weight is doing strenuous exercise.

To create energy, your body burns fat or it burns blood sugar (glucose), but it can’t burn them both at the same time. When you’re not doing anything strenuous your body burns fat. When you exercise into the aerobic zone (70% or more of your max. heart rate) your body will stop burning fat and instantly begin to burn blood sugar – because blood sugar can be converted to energy much faster than fat.

Aerobic exercise will burn fat – but only after you’ve depleted your available blood sugar – which, for most people takes at least 20 to 30 minutes of being in the aerobic zone. Countless overweight individuals are on the exercise bikes and tread mills, pedaling and running, until their heart almost pounds out of their chest but they are not burning fat. The first 30 minutes only burns off blood sugar – after that you’d need another 30 minutes to burn any fat. Exercise equipment sales are on the rise and so is obesity – does that make sense to you?

The truth? Walking is the best type of exercise for healthy weight loss. Walking burns fat. Walking also builds lean muscle which “feeds” on the body’s excess fat. Walk daily, eat whole foods, drink plenty of water, and turn your body into a healthy, energetic, fat burning machine that incinerates fat 24 hours a day! Once you move closer to your ideal weight, then adding some aeorbic exercise is a great way to maintain your weight and support your heart, lungs, muscles, and circulatory system.

Now that you understand the real problem and know how to avoid the big mistakes - You're on the path to weight loss success and healthy living.

Menopause Symptoms and Memory Loss

While you may experience the misery of hot flashes and mood swings as you enter menopause, one thing you can't blame on the "change" is memory loss.

In the latest study that exonerates menopause as a cause of impairing the ability to recall, Taiwanese researchers compared the memory of hundreds of women before they had any menopausal symptoms to their memory as they entered menopause.

They found the women who were going through the menopausal process scored as well or nearly as well on five different cognitive function tests. Results of the study are to be presented Oct. 4 at the American Neurological Association annual meeting in Toronto.

"When women go into perimenopause, they don't need to worry about cognitive decline," said Dr. Jong-Ling Fuh, an attending physician at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and an associate professor of Yang-Ming University School of Medicine.

The researchers said the myth of memory loss during menopause is a perception some women have because as they went through menopause, they felt their memory wasn't as sharp as it had been before. Studies suggesting that hormone replacement therapy might protect against dementia strengthened that belief. However, a large study later found that in older women, hormone replacement therapy not only didn't help protect women from dementia, but could actually increase the risk.

To try to answer the question of whether menopause did have any effect on memory, Fuh and her colleagues studied nearly 700 premenopausal women living on a group of rural islands between Taiwan and China. The Taiwanese government restricted access to these islands until the 1990s, so the authors report that the study's population was nearly homogeneous, which would help rule out other potentially causative factors of memory loss.

The women were between the ages of 40 and 54. None of them had had a hysterectomy, and none took hormone replacement therapy during the study.

All took five cognitive tests designed to assess their memory and cognitive skills at the start of the study, and then again 18 months later.

During the study period, 23 percent of the women began to have symptoms of menopause.

The researchers then compared the memory of the women who had entered menopause to those who had not, and found very little difference. In four of the five tests, there were no statistically significant differences in the two groups of women.

Only on one test was the difference statistically significant, and that difference, said Fuh, was very slight. This test was designed to assess verbal memory and involved showing the women 70 nonsensical figures. Some of the figures were repeated during the test, while most were not. The women were asked whether they had seen the figure earlier.

"For women, menopause does not mean you'll develop memory loss," said Dr. Raina Ernstoff, an attending neurologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. As you're going through perimenopause and experiencing symptoms like hot flashes, she said, you may feel lousy and have trouble sleeping, which might temporarily affect your cognitive skills.

"I don't think declining estrogen levels are what causes memory loss," said Dr. Steven Goldstein, an obstetrician/gynecologist at New York University Medical Center in New York City. "It's not like your memory is bopping along, doing fine and then takes this big dive during menopause, like bone density can."

Both Ernstoff and Goldstein said they weren't aware of many women who believed that menopause might cause significant memory loss. They also both felt that results from this group of women who were so homogeneous might not apply to different groups of women, such as those living in more industrialized society. And they both said that other factors that weren't studied could play a role in memory loss, such as hypertension, which can contribute to vascular dementia.

Ernstoff also pointed out that the education backgrounds can play a large role in memory loss. Fuh acknowledged the researchers did attempt to control the data for educational differences.

Can Hoodia Gum Really Be An Effective Appetite Suppressant?

By Travis Van Slooten

Hoodia gum is one in a line of specialty hoodia products that have hit the market in the past couple years. Other products that have hit the market include hoodia chews and hoodia pops. What all of these specialty products have in common is that they all claim to have the ability to be highly effective and almost instant appetite suppressants. The idea behind these products is that if you can control your appetite, you'll eat less and you'll lose weight.

While that sounds fantastic, I doubt these products have any affect on appetite and do very little for weight loss. For starters, I doubt that any of the hoodia gum products contain authentic hoodia gordonii. The hoodia gordonii plant is found only in South Africa and contains a molecule called P57. This molecule is the active ingredient in the hoodia plant that tricks the brain into thinking you are full. There are several varieties of hoodia, but only the hoodia gordonii variety has the ability to suppress appetite.

Hoodia gordonii is very scarce right now and there simply isn't enough to meet demand. As a result, it is very expensive. Hoodia supplements and products have been very popular the past few years so many companies have jumped on the bandwagon. You have everything from hoodia gum to hoodia tea available today. Unfortunately, many companies have tried to cut corners to reap the profits of this high demand herb by either diluting their products so there is very little hoodia gordonii in them, or simply not using any at all – but still claiming their product contains it.

The reason these companies have been able to get away with this is because hoodia supplements are not regulated. It is up to the consumer to get educated on the facts about hoodia products such as hoodia gum to make sure they don't get scammed. The majority of the hoodia supplements and products on the market today are fake - meaning they contain very little, if any, hoodia gordonii. One expert says that the percentage of fake hoodia supplements could be as high as 80%!

There are several things you can look for when buying hoodia gum and other hoodia products to ensure that what you are buying is real, but the two most important are CITES certificates and independent lab test results. You'll find these documents on websites that sell and market hoodia gums and other hoodia supplements. If you can't find them, then it is very likely the product doesn't contain authentic hoodia gordonii.

You will be hard pressed to find these documents on any hoodia gum website. I have researched many hoodia gum websites and have yet to find both of them clearly displayed. This is the primary reason why I doubt that any hoodia gum product can be a "powerful and fast-acting appetite suppressant" as many claim to be. If you can't find these documents, then the product probably doesn't contain authentic hoodia gordonii and as a result, has virtually no ability to effectively suppress appetite.

However, let's assume that these hoodia gum products contain authentic hoodia gordonii. I still believe they would be highly ineffective when it comes to suppressing appetite because they contain very little hoodia gordonii. Hoodia gum products typically claim to have anywhere from 20-150mg of it per stick of gum. That isn't going to be nearly enough to effectively suppress appetite.

Some experts and doctors say that it can take as much as 3,000mg of hoodia gordonii per day to effectively suppress appetite. At a minimum, most people need anywhere between 800-1,500mg per day to suppress appetite. Assuming you're able to get by with 800mg per day to suppress your appetite, you'd still need to chew several sticks of gum with each stick only containing 20-150mg of hoodia gordonii!

Finally, the other concern I have about hoodia gum products is that most claim to be made using hoodia concentrates, or extracts. These supposed concentrates contain only the active molecule in hoodia gordonii, P57. The problem is, the process to do this hasn't been perfected yet and only one company has the legal authority to do so and that company is Phytopharm.

Phytopharm is a British pharmaceutical company that was given the patent to extract P57 for use in weight loss products. They have spent several years and millions of dollars trying to figure out how to extract P57 to use in weight loss products on a mass scale. Despite the time and money spent, they still haven't been able to do it. How then can a hoodia gum product claim to use a hoodia extract?

The bottom line is I doubt that any of these hoodia gum products contain authentic hoodia gordonii, which is necessary to effectively suppress appetite. Furthermore, even if they do, they contain so little of it that it would probably do very little to suppress your appetite. If you are serious about trying hoodia supplements to suppress appetite, I strongly suggest you stick with traditional hoodia diet pills.

Herbal Weight Loss Magic

By Brian Bonito

They say certain herbs can enhance your weight loss experience. Advertisers claim that herbs, being natural originations from the earth, can and will accelerate your weight loss efforts if you choose to supplement your diet with the correct herbal weight loss elements.

Here’s a quick reality check: Weight loss is not herb based. Never has been, never will be.
Weight loss has more to do with mental programming than any other circumstance you can create, herbal or otherwise. So maybe the title of this article should be “mental weight loss magic.”

Let’s stay with the herbal subject for the sake of argument. Here’s a question: Can an herb stop your body from processing extra calories into fat storage? Is it possible for any herbal supplement to reprogram your thoughts on diet or exercise?

That would be a cool invention. No drug can do that. Neither can an herb.

Weight loss is based upon one simple factor: you body using more calories for energy, daily, than you consume, daily. Losing weight is no more complex than that. Eat less and burn more calories and bang! Weight loss has arrived.

The difficulty that most probable success stories face is coming to terms with that one “small truth.” But if you can come to terms with that: you must burn more calories than you consume on a consistent basis to lose weight. Then you will be well on your way to weight loss success!

Now if you want some herbal weight loss assistance, I recommend one ingredient that you can find at your local health food store. No, it’s not Hoodia. It’s an amino acid called L carnitine. L carnitine is produced naturally in the body and is a fat transporter. In other words, L carnitine shuttles fat into the cells for energy.

Unfortunately, the body does not make enough to be super effective. The best way to combat that, and maximize your weight loss efforts is to supplement your diet with extra L carnitine. 2 to 4 grams daily seems to be the right amount.

Losing weight is not complex. In fact it’s very simple. But it does take some time. Last I checked, no herbal weight loss remedy can make time go by faster, either.

REISHI MUSHROOM ( Ganoderma Lucidum,Ling Zhi)

Reishi mushroom is the perfect herb for anyone who wants to greatly improve their health. We didn't hesitate to recommend Reishi mushroom as an alternative medicine to customers who have had cancer tumors, who feel constant fatigue, or those who just want to keep in good health. They have seen the results (with no side effects) for themselves and we want you to share in the experience of this one-of-a-kind Chinese medicine.

Ling Zhi, the Ancient Chinese herb - Ling Zhi (Ganoderma Lucidum) belongs to the basidiomycotina class of fungi. It is the rarest and most precious Chinese herbs. Legend describes Ling Zhi as the “Spiritual essence” and has the miraculous power or raising the dead to life. The oldest Chinese medical directory, “Shen Lung’s Medica”, and the most respected medical bible of Chinese medicine, “The Chinese Herbal Materia Medica”, both rated Ling Zhi as superior and the best among all other Chinese herbs. To be ranked as superior, a herb must not be intrusive. It must have healing power with no side effects. Ling Zhi has both of these qualities. Ling Zhi was said to strengthen the heart, provide energy, improve memory, restore sensitivity, promote blood circulation, improve complexion and can lead to longevity.

Ling Zhi, the modern medical aspiration - Modern studies from Japan backed the findings of the Chinese medica. Researchers found that Ling Zhi contains high content of Germanium, Complex Polysaccharides and Triterpenoids. Its Germanium content is 4 to 6 times higher than Ginseng. All of these substances are known to be effective for strengthening the immune system and restoring normal bodily functions. Ling Zhi attracted medical attention for its effect in preventing and mitigating a variety of clinical conditions:

  • Chronic Bronchitis, Asthma
  • Neurasthenia, Insomnia, Amnesia
  • Primary Hypertension and Hypotension
  • Coronary heart diseases, Arrhythmia
  • Stroke, Hyperlipidemia, Thombosis
  • Female endocrine disorder, Female physiological disease, menstrual disorder
  • Chronic Hepatitis
  • Gastric diseases and Duodenal Ulcer
  • Allergic disorders (allergic and chronic rhinitis)
  • Dysuria
  • Arthritis, Rheumatism
  • Allergic dermatosis
  • Prevent and mitigate cancer

Wild Ling Zhi in Natural Habitat - Chinese doctors have long stressed the importance of harvesting Ling Zhi in its natural habitat. However, Ling Zhi is very selective of its environment and can only be found in the deepest part of untamed mountain forests. Due to its rarity, most of the products in the present market are made from artificially cultivated Ling Zhi. These Ling Zhi are grown in green houses and are harvested one year after germination. Not only are wild Ling Zhi darker in color, stronger in aroma and harder than cultivated Ling Zhi, many of the complex and active ingredients in the wild Ling Zhi cannot be found in cultivated Ling Zhi.

How long do I need to take the herbs?

Question :
How long do I need to take the herbs? Will the herbs help if I take it for only a few days?

Answer :
If there is a recommended amount of time that is suggested with the herbs, then it is best to follow the directions. Usually we advise our patients to take the herbs until they feel better, plus a couple of more days/weeks, depending on the severity of the problem, so the problem doesn’t just come back when you stop taking the herbs

Example 1:
If you are taking herbs for seasonal allergies, we suggest that you take the herbs before your allergies hit and during the allergy season. Once your symptoms subside and you start feeling better, you can begin to take it every other day and cut down depending on how you are improving. It is different for everyone, so please use your own judgment.

Example 2:
If you are taking herbs for an acute problem, such as a cold, or cough that is a once-in-a-while occurrence, then we suggest you take the herbs until you feel better, plus a few more days to keep the symptoms from coming back.

People with chronic problems, or problems that they have had almost their whole lives will need to take the herbs continuously for months, even years. Again, this depends on the individual and their situation. Please consult your herbalist and follow the directions provided.

Example 3:
If you are taking a daily supplement just for health maintenance reasons, then we suggest you follow the directions on the package and use your judgment. It is really up to you how long you want to take the herbs. Usually, these herbs are safe to take everyday for an indefinite length of time.

Note:
If you only take the herbs for a day or two, chances are you will see no results. It takes a day or two for the herbs to have an effect after it is being taken and if you stop soon after the effect is so minimal that you will not notice. We suggest giving it at least a week, or using the entire amount suggested on the box before you stop or cut down on the dosage.
